I used this for a normal showerhead, and put a handheld spray on one of the diverters for my wife who wants more control for washing her hair.
It works actually 3 ways, which is good and bad.
In my case, you can choose to go for the showerhead, or the handheld spray. The third setting is to have both of them flowing.
The only thing about changing from settings is that they don't really lock into place. you can make a mistake and instead of only the handspray working, you can go a little over and have both showerheads flowing. (as my wife experienced) But its just a matter of putting the lever on a 90 degree angle to 180 degrees.
Overall a great product still.
